Genesis: A Book Overview
Genesis is the book of beginnings. It introduces creation, the fall, covenant, blessing, exile, and the family line through which the rest of the biblical story unfolds. Without Genesis, much of the Bible loses its foundation.
The shape of Genesis
Genesis divides naturally into two large movements. Chapters 1 through 11 describe primeval history: creation, fall, flood, and Babel. Chapters 12 through 50 follow the patriarchs: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph.
Major themes
- God as creator and rightful ruler
- Human rebellion and its consequences
- Covenant promise and blessing through Abraham
- Providence working through flawed people and difficult circumstances
